Residential Development, West London
In 2021, a private developer approached us to carry out the feasibility design for a sliver of disused, wooded and overgrown land adjacent to a railway. Our work necessitated extensive discussions with several bodies, especially the Local Authority. The proposals have been taken forward to a full planning application.

Brecknock, Tunbridge Wells
Located in Camden Park, a historic residential Conservation Area in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Brecknock is a significant three-storey house. It was designed to provide a five-bedroom family home which fits comfortably within its Arcadian setting. Previously unsuccessful applications for a new house on the site meant that our design had to address concerns raised by planners and Conservation Officers.

Residential Apartments
Made Architects have proposed a significant landmark building, three to five stories high, providing just under 100 dwellings. With close proximity to the coast on three sides of the site, made Architects have proposed a modern and iconic set of apartments that offer large outside terraces and sea views. This proposal will be a feature building within the local context.

Valley Invicta Primary School, Kings Hill
Valley Invicta Primary School is a new school that was built to provide additional school places for families moving into new residential developments at Kings Hill, a modern and expanding garden village in Kent. The design had to be future-proofed for enlargement to a three-form entry school, with the construction taking place in two phases. The completed first phase provided a one-form entry school with special educational needs provision for children on the autism spectrum. A future phase will expand the school to three-form entry, to accommodate extra places that will be required as Kings Hill grows.

Frittenden CofE Primary School is a small, rural school which is Grade II listed. The school buildings did not meet government design guidance, and this made it difficult to meet the requirements of Ofsted and Every Child Matters.

After the successful completion of the refurbishment of a science block and a new resource centre, La Retraite RC Girls’ School in Clapham Park invited Burns Guthrie to prepare designs for a new Movement, Music and Dance building. The building includes dance and drama suites with their own separate entrances, two music classrooms, changing rooms and staff offices.

Crutches Farm
Crutches Farm is a historic farmstead located in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This collection of dilapidated and disused agricultural buildings sits within the curtilage of a Grade II listed farmhouse but does little to enhance the setting of the listed building. Burns Guthrie were part of a team appointed to examine the refurbishment and possible conversion of the buildings, which include an oast, a fattening lodge, a stable and a timber-frame barn, to residential or leisure use.

Duncton School, West Sussex
In 2017, West Sussex County Council commissioned Burns Guthrie to carry out feasibility studies for 14 schools. In the case of Duncton, the challenge was to design a new school to amalgamate the existing and separate infant and junior schools into one new school. This involved extensive discussions with both schools, the Local Education Authority and the Diocese. It was important that the design inspired and won approval from all stakeholders and had to allow the school to operate during construction work.

St Bernadette’s Church, West Kingsdown
